How to Make Coconut Modak Without a Mould

You can easily prepare modak without a mould using only your hands. The shape may look slightly different, but the soft coconut texture and festive flavour remain the same.

Mix desiccated coconut, milk powder and cardamom powder in a bowl. Add condensed milk gradually and combine everything until it resembles soft dough. The mixture should hold together without sticking heavily to your hands.

Grease your palms with a small amount of ghee. Take a portion of the mixture, roll it into a smooth ball and gently shape it into a cone. Flatten the bottom so the modak can stand properly. You may also fill the centre with finely chopped nuts before sealing and shaping it.

Continue making cones until the mixture is finished. Place them on a lightly greased plate and refrigerate for approximately 20–30 minutes. This helps the handmade modaks retain their shape.

If the mixture becomes sticky, add more desiccated coconut. If it feels dry, add condensed milk in very small amounts.
